Desktop Recording Tutorial

There are several free desktop recorders available on the net to record your poker sessions. One of the easier free ones to use is the ZD Soft Screen Recorder. You can download it HERE.

After you install the screen recorder, you'll be brought to one main screen. Here are some general recommended settings. You should make sure to choose to record a specific area of you screen. This will help reduce file size by only recording the area of your desktop that's necessary. After you chose that option, then chose, "Select an area". A rectangular cropping tool will be shown on your desktop. You'll want to crop that area of the screen you wish to record, and once you do it will save that specific region of your screen.

Towards the bottom you can select the quality of the video. Obviously the higher the quality, the bigger your file size will be. The 4th setting, as shown, is a recommended setting that maintains decent enough quality, while at the same time, keeping the file size smaller. AVI is also a preferred file format, as it will convert into various compression (such as Xvid) modes better.

Once you've selected a filename for your video, you are ready to begin. You can click Start and anytime while you're recording you can pause the recording by clicking F3. To resume you can click F3 once again, and F2 to stop recording.

So when you've completed recording your session, you can further reduce the size of your video by using another free compression utility called STOIK Video converter. If you don't have it, you can download it HERE. If you use this utility, along with the Xvid video codec, which you should already have on your system (if you watched any videos on PokerZion), you can compress your video size by as much as 80%, and still maintain decent quality.

First, select the file you wish to convert by entering it in the Input file. Then choose a name and destination for the converted file. Finally select DivX AVI (NTSC) for the Output format.

Once you selected this options, then go to Edit from the main menu and select OUTPUT PROFILES. You should then see a screen like the one listed below.

From here you should first select your frame size. The smaller you use, the smaller your file size will be. The default setting is about the minimum you should use, which is 720 x 480. Using the original output size is fine as well. You'll next want to select the video compressor. Choose XVid MPEG-4 Codec. Click HERE to download it if you don't already have it,

You can also change the audio compression, which will reduce the file size. We recommend selecting 48kBit, 16k Hz Stereo. You can go slightly lower without suffering too much quality.

Next, click on the Configure button that's located directly under the video compressor option. From here select the following options as shown.

Profile @ Level: Advanced Simple @ L5

Encoding type: Single pass

Target quantizer: 6.0 (The higher the #, the smaller the file).

Once those options are selected, the click OK and then OK again to return to the main screen. When all of your options are selected, click on the Record button, and the compression will begin.

Happy recording!
